Up for sale is a rather unique pair of first generation JBL L-100 Centurys, in perfect working order and in good cosmetic condition. Also included are custom solid walnut stands, original style walnut grill frames (will accept "eggcrates"), and two pairs of grill covers--one green, one dark brown.
Here's the story: I've had them since the day after Eddie Van Halen died. I obtained them from a flipper, who said (take this part with a grain of salt) they're from the estate of a JBL employee who owned them from Day 1. He added oak veneer over the OG walnut, as well as a fascia to the front, and removed the foil badges (thus the serial #s). Supposedly he preferred a driver-only presentation.
These speakers perform flawlessly and are LOUD and CLEAR. Be it Wagner, Waylon, White Zombie, WAR, whatever, they are capable of delivering a holographic soundstage--floor, headroom, air between the strings, all that good stuff. Drive them with a clean-enough signal and, placed well, they indeed can "disappear" into the listening room. Presence and brilliance controls work. I have never opened them up, one cabinet has been upgraded to banana posts, the other has the OG guillotine connectors.
Reason for sale: I wear hearing aids; my ears simply can't take the volume these things are capable of delivering--before long, they start to ring. I've downsized, and these Centurys could use a proper home.
I can demo these with an excellent tube rig, vinyl and cd. Price is firm, and quite fair for the sound alone; the extras included make this quite a deal.
