Here are three common reasons why a piano may require tuning:

-- 1 -- Moving the piano. Just moving the piano a few inches may cause it to go out of tune.

-- 2 -- Changes in temperature. Pianos fare best when in a location that is climate controlled, maintained at a constant temperature throughout the year. If the piano is located in a place where there is no thermostat controlled air conditioning and heating system, it may require more frequent tuning.

-- 3 -- Playing the piano (that's a good thing). A piano should be tuned twice a year if it is played for an average of one hour per day. Quarterly tunings are recommended for pianos played a daily average of three hours or more. More frequent tunings may be needed for extensive use or "heavy-handed" players.

Acoustic pianos require tuning, on average, once or twice a year; even pianos that haven't been played during that time must be tuned. Hours of use, instrument quality and environmental conditions all have an effect on a piano's tuning.

Natural expansion and contraction of the instrument during seasonal changes in temperature and humidity, cause the strings to stretch and go out of tune. Additionally, natural fatigue of the piano's metal strings over time and cumulative pressure exerted on the strings from normal use, will cause the piano's pitch to go flat.

Typically, the changes in tonality are not noticeable, when played solo, because all the strings tend to go out of tune simultaneously. However, when the piano is played with other musical instruments, or recorded music, the intonations then become apparent.

Your piano is a finely crafted mechanism that, when properly maintained, can help facilitate years of musical creativity and enjoyment. To experience improved reliability and quality of sound requires having your piano tuned regularly.
